“Design & Solidarity” (Columbia University Press, 2023) is a book that explores the power of design, art, and architecture in shaping emergent forms of mutualism, fulfilling their promise of solidarity, and ensuring that these values endure.

“Design & Solidarity” is a field guide for rebuilding public life from the bottom up.

—Ellen Lupton, Curator Emerita, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City; author of Design Is Storytelling.

The book emerges from conversations led by authors — architect Rafi Segal (MIT) and artist Marisa Morán Jahn (Parsons/The New School) — dialoguing with leading thinkers, including MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and social movement leader Ai-jen Poo, who joins Marisa and Rafi in conversation at Haymarket House, along with real estate developer Ernst Valery and anthropologist and architect Iván Arenas, who will moderate.

NPHM Executive Director Lisa Yun Lee will open the event will introductory remarks. A book signing/celebration with light refreshments will take place immediately after the event.

This event is presented by the National Public Housing Museum in partnership with the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, the Social Justice Initiative (SJI) at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Haymarket Books.

Marisa Morán Jahn is currently the National Public Housing Museum's current Artist as Instigator in residence.
